From the Desk (and Mind) of Marc Landsberg

If You Can Laugh at Yourself, You Can Laugh at Anything

So, I understand this week is Laugh at Work Week.

And no, it’s not an April Fool’s joke.

Laughing at work shouldn’t be relegated to your “fun” file. Don’t lie, we all have them.

Instead, it should be a daily routine. You can find treasure troves of comedic fodder all over the workplace.

In fact, you’ll have an easier time making someone laugh at work.

Why?

For starters, no-one is there to laugh, unlike a comedy club. With low expectations, it’s easy to knock it out of the park. Humor is often driven by unexpected incongruity – and what better place for that, than your office?

Second, people are usually looking for something to laugh at in the workplace. Actually, said better, there’s always something to laugh at (Bill’s presentation, for example), so what everyone is really looking for, is an EXCUSE to laugh. Give them that gift, please.

Third, you can literally point at anything in the workplace and make it funnier.

Powerpoint for instance. Change a straight line to a dotted, curved line. It’s 23% funnier.

The “K” sound is the funniest sound in the English language. So, instead of saying “who wants to go for drinks after work,” say “how about some cocktails?” Comedic gold.

Ok, off you go. And remember, if you can laugh at yourself, you can laugh at anything.
